𝗣hilippine 𝗦urfing 𝗛istory 𝗥evelation: 𝗕agasbas 𝗕each is the true birth place of surfing in the country
Aside from being the home of the world’s first and oldest monument dedicated to our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal which was erected in 1898, the capital town of Daet in Camarines Norte will add another “firsts” on its rich history and culture as the home of the first Filipino Surfer and the true birthplace of surfing in the Philippines.
On a Facebook post last June 23, 2022 , Mr. Taz Hoffman, An American who previously visited and lived in the Philippines posted an old news article clippings dated May 12, 1970 showing that the earliest Filipino Surfer on record to date is Mr. Regino Guinto Jr. who surfed the waves of Bagasbas Beach as early as 1970 on his handcrafted surfboard. It was also mentioned in the article that Mr. Guinto has mastered hydro-dynamics and possibly the only Filipino Surf Board Engineer during that time since he was both an engineer and a keen sportsman. These old clippings we’re given to him by Mr. Rheg Q. Guinto, Mr. Guinto Jr.’s grandson. A few days after, Mr. Hoffman posted some vintage photos showing Mr. Guinto shaping a wooden surfboard and glassed it with fiberglass and resin and a group photo together with Mr. Jim Francisco who along with Guinto are the first known surfing enthusiasts in Daet and a group photo with some American Nationals believed to be the one who thought and transferred the surfing knowledge & skills with the locals.
This major revelation will cement the status and identity of Bagasbas Beach in Daet as the TRUE BIRTH PLACE OF SURFING IN THE PHILIPPINES contrary to the existing declaration that the Municipality of Baler in Aurora Province in North Eastern Luzon was the birthplace due to the surf board that was left during the filming of Hollywood Film “Apocalypse Now” produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979. With the release of this vintage article, it clearly shows and certifies that Surfing in Bagasbas Beach started 9 years ahead of that in Baler.
This was a welcome news as the Provincial Government of Camarines Norte thru the Provincial Tourism Operations Office, Municipal Tourism Office of LGU – Daet, Brgy. Bagasbas and other local surfing stakeholders will work hand in hand to further develop this eco-tourism spot who currently holds the distinction as the “Surfing Capital of Bicol” as declared through House Bill 8978, principally authored by the late Camarines Norte 2nd District Representative Marisol "Toots" Panotes to boost the tourism industry of the province which will be deemed beneficial to the local economy and will provide more opportunities to the community. Indeed, Camarines Norte is where the excitement begins and will never end!
Special thanks to Mr. Tazz Hoffman, Mr. Rheg Q. Guinto and Ms. Bless Lelis of Bagasbas Surfers Club for the information and images provided on this article.

Persons Deprived of Liberty of Daet District Jail were given a special day during Mother’s Day celebration. While having dinner, jail officers serenaded and gave them flowers and gifts. BJMPRO5 Regional Director J/SSUPT FELLY ATIENZA CEBUMA said that the she recognizes the efforts of PDL-mothers who continue to “mother” their children from afar, even behind bars.
